It took about 1 1/2 hrs and yes it was painful but very worth it! It's weird because it isn't a constant pain, only when the needle is on the skin
so it makes it easier to take. You have about 5-10 seconds of pain then he re-inks the needle then 5-10 seconds, etc. If you need a break (bathroom, drink of water) he stops let you get up and then starts again. Basically though it's not unbearable, just look at how many people go back for more
