As long as you aren't sticking your tongue out at everyone you meet you can be fairly discreet about your tongue ring. I've had people I've known for a month or two suddenly exclaim, "You have your tongue pierced!?!?"
I even recently wore mine while talking to my boss (who wouldn't approve of it!) and it went by unnoticed.
